{Scroll down for English}

Will the tax filing deadline be postponed this year?

Since the new stimulus bill, the American Rescue Plan Act was signed into law by the president two days ago. The bill directly changed the tax return for 2020. There are two main changes:

  1. The first $10,200 ($20,400 for husband and wife) of the unemployment benefits of taxpayers whose income is less than 150,000 in 2020 is tax-free.

  2. Taxpayers received too much Obama premium credits in 2020 would not have to pay back the excess.

Because the bill has just been introduced, the IRS currently needs to update its guidelines, tax forms, and systems. We do not know when the IRS will be able to complete these tasks.

At present, the IRS is really busy. There is still a backlog of about 6.9 million tax returns of 2019 that has not yet been processed. Next week, the IRS will be issuing the third round of stimulus check of $1400. As for the update of new tax forms and systems, I really don’t know when it will be completed.

Many people now ask, will the deadline for tax filing this year be postponed?

In my opinion, it should be postponed because it takes time for IRS to update the guidelines, tax forms and systems. It may take several weeks, so when the task is completed, it is already close to April 15th the end of the tax season.

A few days ago, Richard Neal, Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee; Bill Pascrell, Chairman of the Oversight Subcommittee; Kevin Brady, the Top Republican Congressman; and the National Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the National Association of Tax Professionals, and AARP. . . all these agencies have proposed to the IRS Commissioner that the tax filing deadline needs to be postponed. But so far, the IRS has not responded.

We will pay close attention to this, and if there is any update, we will update it in time. The current tax filing deadline is still April 15.
